Not to get all "Wicked" on you...

It's like looking in a mirror sometimes...

Lauren and I are still photo blogging over at 3 PM on Sunday -- check it out.

I love comparing our pictures every week. Some weeks, they are so similar that I'm convinced our brains run on the same frequency. Other times, the scenes couldn't be more different.

Looking back at the past 10+ months -- and even further to my four years at college -- it's really interesting how a person can come into your life and completely change it. Or how you can meet someone who is YOU, just in another body.

That's how it was when Lauren and I became friends. We didn't connect instantly when we met. She roomed with one of my best friends from high school and when we first were introduced, it was barely a passing hello. Flash forward one year to a winter term program in London (a class comparing British and U.S. media that included a trip to London? Sign me up!) and suddenly, we were inseparable. It's strange how that happens.

We have so much in common that it's scary. We spent many a "wild" Saturday night watching "The West Wing" or hosting journalism-themed movie nights. You wish you'd been invited... Add to that the fact that we can reference Maureen, Charlie, Diane and George and know who the other person is talking about -- no, these aren't our friends -- and we are pretty much best friend soulmates. ;)

There have been other people like that too. You meet and it's like finding a missing piece of yourself. I count myself as incredibly lucky to have these strong relationships.

And so not to totally bust out my not-so-inner musical theatre nerd, but I can't help but think of the lyrics to "For Good."

I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you

Cheese factor times 10, yet it still makes me teary.

Even better:

There are people I barely hung out with in America who somehow during this year abroad, have connected with thanks to the wonder of the Internet. People I knew only in passing or an occasional shared class with whom I can't wait to reunite. And high school best friends who drifted apart during college and are now among the people I'm most looking forward to spending time with again.

God is good. Life is full of blessings.

  1. I love, love, LOVE this entry! First of all, I've adored "For Good" ever since the first time I heard it, and I so fully believe in the lyrics. I honestly believe that people come into our lives for a reason and change us for good. It's really incredible how that works sometimes, and it's amazing when you sit and think about it. It just makes you feel so blessed to know the people you do and to know that there are these people in your life who have changed it "for good." :-)

Second - I think Charlie and Diane should be your friends ;-) Can I join in too?!?

  2. You make me blush! But I truly couldn't be me without your friendship and I agree that how we met is truly hilarious {for those of you wondering, the first time Erin met me, she said hello and I was past deadline so I said "OMG I'M GOING TO DIE!!!!!". The second time we both said hello :)}
